2010 Trip to Alaska - Part 1

Over 5 years ago, I think, friends from Colorado and us decided it would be fun to go on a cruise to Alaska together. Year after year, when the cruise was mentioned, there were various reasons for putting it off until the following year. Finally last year, Ken and I decided to go ahead and go to Alaska and we told everyone that when the group was able to go, we would go again with them. This summer most were able to go, (we still had one couple unable to make it, but we decided to go anyway). It turned out that we were glad we had gone ahead and taken the trip last year, it made this trip more relaxing because we didn't have any agenda of things we wanted to see this time.

One of the first things you always do on a cruise is learn the emergency procedures and practice putting on the life vests. We also practiced holding our breath!

Last year we arrived in Vancouver in the morning before we got up, so it was fun to leave during the day and get to see Vancouver from a different perspective.
This is the 8 of us during one of the formal night dinners. Back row, left to right is: Carol, Renate, Jon and Jane. Front row: Us, Kris and Cliff. We have known Carol and Jane since Kari was born. Kris is Jane's sister and we knew her when we lived in Colorado, but hadn't spent as much time with her.
Trying to be a totem pole like the one next to us.
We hiked out to the Mendenhall Glacier and a waterfall close to it. It was the first of many, many glaciers we saw on the trip.
We went to a garden where they took logs, turned them upside down, put them in the ground, then put moss and dirt in the root area of the tree, and planted flowers among the roots. They were really pretty and very unique.
This a view of Juneau from the top of a hill in the gardens.
There were 2 beautiful flower displays where you could take pictures. This one is a giant heart made of flowers and...
...this one was kind of like a bird cage with a statue of a girl in the middle of it.
I took this picture of Ken and Jon right before they lifted their shirts and exposed their chests! Notice their hands are all posed to lift their shirts, I was just to quick for them. Jane got a picture of them with their shirts up, it was sooo funny!!

Did you actually get that close to Mendenhall? or a zoom lense. We didn't know you could hike that close, so obviously we didn't. Much better pictures than ours. Deb

It's from a zoom lens. Did you hike out to the waterfall? That's where I took the picture from.

No, we didn't know about it. We just hiked around the visitors center, alittle. Did yours incluce a salmon dinner, we were very disappointed in the salmon dinner, served chuck wagon style, didn't have much food left when we got there & it was raining by that time & cold, very little cover.
